D&D 3.5 Wild Empathy, Class Ability - Enhancement
Players Handbook; SRD Link
A ranger/druid can improve the attitude of an animal by a method of connecting to and calming their wild energy. The ranger/druid rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger/druid level and his Charisma modifier or Wisdom modifier (players choice) to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly. Any animal attacking will have a starting attitude of hostile and will need to have a attitude of at least unfriendly to make it stop attacking. That does not mean it will leave the area or not start attacking again if it in turn is attacked or threatened.
To use wild empathy, the ranger/druid and the animal must be able to study each other, which means that they must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal(s) in this way takes 1 full-round action. This ability can influence a number of animals simultaneously with a maximum number equal to one plus half your ranger/druid level (2 at 2nd, 3 at 4th, 4 at 6th...).
Special: If you have Favored Enemy(Animal or Magical Beast) class ability you may add your bonus to your wild empathy check result. You may only apply the Favored Enemy bonus when dealing with the correct type of creature.
Wild Empathy DC: The DC is equal to 10 plus the animals Hit Die plus its starting attitude modifier, which can be found on the Table: Influencing Animal Attitudes below. The ranger/druid can also use this ability to influence a magical beast, but the DC increases by 4. If the ranger/druid or his allies have hurt an animal or a magical beast than the DC of the wild empathy check is increased by 5. A druid/ranger makes only a single wild empathy check and compares that to each target individually. So wild empathy could be successful against some targets, but not others.
Quick Note: DC = 10 + HD + Attitude + 4(if Magical Beast) + 5(if already attacked)
